You paid someone to build you a website. Maybe ₹25,000, maybe ₹1.5 lakh. It looks decent. It has your services listed, a contact form, your phone number. But the phone barely rings and the form submissions trickle in — maybe one or two a month if you're lucky. Meanwhile your competitor, with a website that looks worse than yours, seems to be doing fine. What's going wrong? In almost every case I've seen with businesses across Delhi NCR, the problem isn't the website's existence — it's that the website was built to look good rather than to generate leads. These are two very different briefs, and most web developers only know how to do the first one.
Table of Contents
First: Is the Problem Traffic or Conversion?
Before we diagnose, we need to distinguish between two completely different problems that look the same on the surface: "my website isn't getting leads."
Problem A — Traffic problem: Not enough people are visiting your website. You need SEO or paid ads to drive more relevant traffic. The website might be perfectly good at converting visitors — you just need more of them.
Problem B — Conversion problem: People are visiting your website but leaving without contacting you. No amount of extra traffic will fix this — you'll just send more people to a site that doesn't work.
How do you know which one you have? Log in to Google Analytics 4 and check your monthly sessions. If you're getting fewer than 200 sessions a month, traffic is likely your primary problem. If you're getting 500+ sessions a month and generating fewer than 5 enquiries, you have a conversion problem.
Most businesses I work with in Delhi NCR — from clinics in Vasant Kunj to IT consultants in Noida Sector 18 — actually have both problems. But fixing conversion is almost always faster and cheaper. This guide focuses on conversion, but I'll flag the traffic issues too.
Reason 1: You're Getting the Wrong Traffic
You can have thousands of monthly visitors and zero leads if those visitors aren't your target customers. This happens more often than you'd think.
Common causes:
- Your site ranks for informational keywords (e.g., "what is GST") but not commercial ones (e.g., "GST registration consultant Delhi")
- If you're running Google Ads with broad match keywords and no negative keywords, you might be paying for irrelevant clicks
- Your content attracts students or researchers, not buyers
- You're getting traffic from cities or states you don't serve
Fix: In GA4, check which pages receive the most traffic. In Google Search Console, check which queries are bringing people to your site. Are those the queries a potential customer would type? If most of your traffic comes from blog posts about general topics and very little comes to your service pages, that's your signal. You need to work on ranking your service pages, not just informational content.
Reason 2: Your Messaging Is Unclear
A visitor lands on your homepage and within 5 seconds needs to answer three questions:
- What does this business do?
- Is it relevant to me?
- What should I do next?
If any of those answers aren't immediately obvious, they leave. Most Indian business websites fail this test spectacularly. They open with a generic tagline like "Quality Service, Trusted Experience" that could belong to any business in any category in any city. There's no mention of what they actually do, who they serve, or where they're located until the visitor scrolls halfway down the page.
Fix: Your above-the-fold section (the part visible before any scrolling) must contain:
- What you do — specifically. "Interior design and renovation services" not "creating beautiful spaces".
- Who you serve and where. "For homes and offices in South Delhi and Gurgaon."
- One clear CTA. "Get a Free Quote" or "Book a Consultation" — one button, not five.
That's it. Simple, specific, direct. It feels boring to write but it converts far better than poetic taglines.
Reason 3: Your Site Is Too Slow
Google's research shows that a one-second delay in page load time can reduce conversions by 7%. On mobile — where 80% of Indian internet users browse — sites that take more than 3 seconds to load lose more than half their visitors before the page even finishes loading.
This is especially devastating for lead generation because slow sites create an immediate impression of unprofessionalism. If your website loads slowly, a visitor's brain subconsciously wonders: "If they can't even maintain a fast website, how reliable are they?"
How to check: Go to Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) and enter your URL. Check both Desktop and Mobile scores. A mobile score below 60 is an emergency. Between 60–80 is average. Above 80 is good.
Common fixes:
- Compress all images. Use WebP format instead of JPEG or PNG. Tools like Squoosh or ShortPixel can reduce image file sizes by 60–80% with no visible quality loss.
- Use a caching plugin (for WordPress sites — WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache).
- Use a CDN (Content Delivery Network). Cloudflare's free plan is often enough for small business sites.
- Remove unnecessary plugins and scripts. Every third-party chat widget, social media feed, and animation script adds load time.
- Switch to a faster hosting provider. Many Indian businesses are on shared hosting plans at HostGator or GoDaddy that are catastrophically slow. A ₹500/month plan on a quality host like DigitalOcean or Hostinger Business can double your site speed.
Reason 4: You Have No Clear Call to Action
A call to action (CTA) is an instruction that tells your visitor what to do next. "Call us now." "Get a free quote." "Book a consultation." Without a clear, prominent CTA, most visitors simply leave — not because they're not interested, but because they didn't know what step to take.
Common CTA mistakes on Indian business websites:
- The only CTA is in the footer or on the contact page — the visitor has to go looking for it
- Multiple competing CTAs ("Call us / WhatsApp us / Email us / Fill this form / Visit our office") create choice paralysis
- CTA text is vague: "Contact Us" tells you nothing about what happens next, creating hesitation
- CTAs are styled as plain text links, not buttons — they're easy to miss while scanning
Fix: Choose one primary CTA for your site — for most Delhi NCR service businesses, "Get a Free Quote" or "Book a Free Consultation" works best. Place it in the hero section of your homepage, at the end of every service page, and as a sticky button on mobile (always visible at the bottom of the screen). Make it a contrasting-coloured button that's impossible to miss.
Reason 5: Your Mobile Experience Is Broken
Most Indian web developers still primarily design for desktop and then either use a responsive template or "adjust" things for mobile as an afterthought. The result is often disastrous on small screens: text that's too small to read, buttons that are too close together to tap accurately, forms where the submit button goes below the fold, images that push content off-screen.
Test your site properly: Don't just resize your browser window — use an actual smartphone to navigate through your entire site. Try to fill the contact form. Try to tap the phone number. Try to read the service page text without zooming. You'll almost certainly find problems you never noticed on your laptop.
Critical mobile fixes:
- Phone numbers must be clickable (tel: links) — tapping a phone number should initiate a call directly
- WhatsApp number should open WhatsApp with a pre-filled message — use a wa.me link
- All tap targets (buttons, links) should be at least 44×44 pixels
- Font size should be at least 16px for body text — anything smaller forces pinching and zooming
- Forms should use the correct input types so the right keyboard appears (type="tel" for phone numbers, type="email" for emails)
- Horizontal scrolling is a dealbreaker — nothing should overflow the screen width
Reason 6: You Have No Trust Signals
In Delhi NCR — a market where online scams are well-publicised and word-of-mouth is historically the primary way businesses get customers — trust is everything. A visitor who doesn't trust your website won't fill your form, no matter how well-designed it is.
What builds trust online:
- Real photos of you and your team: Stock photos are immediately recognisable and immediately create suspicion. A genuine photo of your office in Nehru Place or your team at a client site does more for trust than any graphic design element.
- Named testimonials with photos: "Excellent service — 5 stars" from "A Happy Customer" builds no trust. "Raunak redesigned our Shopify store and our conversion rate doubled in 3 months. — Priya Sharma, Founder, PureThread Clothing, Saket" is enormously persuasive.
- A physical address: Even if you work from home, having your city and area displayed signals you're a real local business — not a remote team in another country.
- Google Reviews widget or badge: Displaying your Google rating prominently (if it's 4.0 or above) builds instant credibility.
- Certifications and registrations: GST registration number, professional body memberships, ISO certifications — anything that signals legitimacy.
- Media mentions or client logos: If a known publication has featured you, or you've worked with recognisable companies, display this.
Reason 7: Your Contact Form Has Too Much Friction
Every extra field in your contact form reduces the number of people who complete it. This is backed by extensive research across thousands of websites, and it's especially true in India where mobile form completion is already slower due to on-screen keyboards.
The ideal contact form for a service business:
- Name
- Phone number (or WhatsApp number)
- Brief message or service required (optional dropdown)
That's three fields. You gather everything else on the follow-up call.
What kills form completions:
- Requiring email AND phone — choose one, or make one optional
- CAPTCHA — the "I'm not a robot" tick box and image challenges cause meaningful drop-off, especially on mobile
- A mandatory "Budget" or "Company Name" field that feels intrusive before any relationship is established
- Form validation errors that don't clearly explain what went wrong
- No confirmation message after submission — people resubmit the form because they're not sure it worked
Also: make WhatsApp an option. Many Delhi NCR customers — particularly those in Punjabi Bagh, Janakpuri, or Faridabad — will far more readily send a WhatsApp message than fill a form. A floating "Chat on WhatsApp" button can easily double your enquiries from mobile visitors.
Reason 8: Your Pages Target the Wrong Keywords
This is the SEO dimension of the lead generation problem. If your service pages are optimised for the wrong keywords — or not optimised at all — you'll attract either no traffic or the wrong traffic.
The most common mistake: Service pages that use internal business language rather than how customers actually search. A digital marketing agency might name their service "360° Brand Amplification Strategy" but their potential clients in Gurgaon are searching "social media marketing agency Gurgaon" or "SEO services for startups Gurgaon."
Fix: Use Google Search Console to see what queries currently bring people to your site. Use Google's autocomplete (type your service in the search bar and see what Google suggests) to understand how customers phrase their needs. Build your page titles, headings, and content around those natural language phrases — not your internal terminology.
Also check: does each of your service pages appear in Google at all? Search for your service + your city. If you're not on the first two pages, Google doesn't consider your page relevant for that search. That needs to be fixed before anything else will generate organic leads.
Reason 9: You're Invisible in Local Search
If you're a local service business — a doctor in Saket, an accountant in Connaught Place, a contractor in Dwarka — the most valuable leads you can get come from local search: people searching "service + near me" or "service + area name" on Google. These searches happen thousands of times a day across Delhi NCR, and the businesses that appear in the Google Local Pack (the map section) get the vast majority of enquiries.
If you're not in the Local Pack:
- Is your Google Business Profile created and verified? If not, that's step one.
- Is your profile complete — categories, services, photos, description, hours?
- Do you have at least 10 genuine Google reviews?
- Is your address on your website exactly matching your GBP address?
- Are there citations of your business on JustDial, Sulekha, and other local directories with the same name, address, and phone number?
Fixing these issues can move you into the Local Pack within 4–8 weeks, depending on your competition. For many Delhi NCR service businesses, local pack visibility alone generates 5–15 enquiries a month.
Reason 10: You're Not Following Up Fast Enough
This one surprises people, but it matters more than almost anything on your website itself. Research consistently shows that your conversion rate from lead to client drops dramatically the longer you wait to follow up.
- Respond within 5 minutes: significantly higher conversion rate
- Respond within 1 hour: moderate conversion rate
- Respond within 24 hours: low conversion rate
- Respond after 24 hours: they've already hired someone else
In Delhi NCR, where potential clients often contact multiple businesses simultaneously on JustDial or Sulekha and hire whoever calls them first, speed of response is literally your competitive advantage.
Fix: Set up an email or SMS notification immediately when your form is submitted. Enable Google Business Profile messaging notifications on your phone. If you can't personally respond quickly, set up an auto-reply: "Thank you for your enquiry. We'll call you within 2 hours during business hours. For urgent queries, WhatsApp us at [number]." This buys you time while keeping the prospect warm.
Your Lead Generation Audit Checklist
Use this checklist to audit your own website right now. Check each item honestly.
- ☐ My homepage clearly states what I do, who I serve, and where within 5 seconds of landing
- ☐ My primary CTA is a prominent, contrasting button visible without scrolling
- ☐ My mobile PageSpeed score is above 70
- ☐ My phone number is a clickable tap-to-call link on mobile
- ☐ I have a WhatsApp contact option
- ☐ My contact form has 3 fields or fewer
- ☐ I display named testimonials with photos or at least full names
- ☐ I have a Google Business Profile with 10+ reviews
- ☐ My service pages use keywords my customers actually search
- ☐ I appear in Google's first two pages for my main service + location search
- ☐ I respond to all enquiries within 2 hours during business hours
If you ticked fewer than 7 of these, your website has significant lead generation problems — and fixing them doesn't necessarily require a complete redesign. Often it requires targeted changes to messaging, structure, and content that can be made in days, not months.
A Gurgaon Cyber City IT services firm was getting 800 monthly visitors but fewer than 3 enquiries. After fixing messaging, mobile experience, and adding clear CTAs, enquiries jumped to 22 per month — without any increase in traffic.
